“The goal of the FAME So Fresh Produce Market is to increase the accessibility of healthy food to our neighbors, as well as to foster a greater sense of community and harmony in south Los Angeles,” explained Denise Hunter, President and Chief Operating Officer of FAME Corporations. “We are all so delighted to have formed this essential partnership to bring good nutrition to the local residents in the area.”

The celebration began with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; Denise Hunter; Rev. Dr. John J. Hunter, Senior Minister of the First AME Church of Los Angeles; John Dunn, Owner of So Fresh Produce; and Jin Ju Wilder, President of So Fresh Produce.  Other prominent officials were in attendance to show their support, including Rocky Delgadillo, former Los Angeles City Attorney; Mark Ridley Thomas, Los Angeles County Supervisor for the Second District; Senator Curren D. Price, Jr., Senate District 26; and representatives from the Offices of Karen Bass, Speaker of the California State of Assembly and Mike Davis, California State Assembly Member for the 48th District.

The celebration also featured a live performance by the Crenshaw High School Jazz Ensemble, hot eats, a children’s corner and a produce carving station, featuring the Food Network’s Chef Ray. Plus, Heather Hays of FAME’s Nutrition Program was on-hand to educate attendees on healthy eating options.

“Providing better food choices in this type of environment is one of the best things FAME has ever done,” stated Dorothy Carson, a local resident. “It’s long overdue,” she added.

The FAME So Fresh Produce Market is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and is located at 1968 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90018, in the FAME Renaissance parking lot at the corner of Western Avenue and Adams Boulevard.

FAME SO FRESH PRODUCE MARKET is an economic development program within the FAME Assistance Corporation (FAC). FAC is a non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation affiliated with the 19,000 member First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles (FAME), the oldest Black church in Los Angeles. Founded in 1872, by former slave Biddy Mason, FAME has a long tradition of supporting initiatives for enterprise development and community empowerment.  Prior to the Civil Unrest in 1992, economic development was practically non-existent in urban Los Angeles. Since1992, however, FAC has been a driving force in the redevelopment of south Los Angeles and the surrounding communities.
